Our first joint dog we got 1990 after we had travelled around in Asia. In a guest house in India the owner had a Dash Hound who frequently visited us and we decided to get one when we came back home. When we came home we bought Olga, a mix between a Dash Hound and a Drever. She was conceived for hunting, maybe not a very smart choice. But it was alright, as long as we carried a shovel with us on the walks. Olga very often got stuck under things when she was out hunting (of her own). She got stuck under containers, houses and worst of all, under the railway track.
A good difference however between a Dash Hound- Drever and a Saluki on the run, is that you can always hear in what direction the Dash Hound- Drever is running. The saluki is most often silent. On the other hand the Saluki sooner or much much later comes back, the Dash Hound- Drever does not. A year after we got Olga we also got Birger. He came to us on foster care from a friend. They were the same age. Birger was a mix between a German Shepard and a Standard Poodle. He looked like a big Standard Poodle and behaved like a German Shepard. Together they slowly became friends and after a while a remarkable couple, because Birger stayed with us for good
From time to time we where talking about having a Saluki but we thought at the time that two dogs where enough for us. A great thing about Birger was that you could cut his fur as you wished, so we sometimes transformed him in to a Saluki, smooth on the body, long fur on the ears and an extraordinary plume at the tail. We also put a Sight Hound collar around his neck. Sometimes we said that he was a Saluki. Maybe he didn’t exactly look like World Winner Shiraz California Dreamin, but we thought he was handsome, and most people haven’t seen a Saluki before. Olga became 12 years and Birger became some years older, 15.
At the present we have two wonderful Salukis.
